The above photographs show some of the progress being made by our Haven's Emergency Response Team in Port au Prince.
69 families living here and around 350 people, the vast majority are children. Madame Elizabeth is the community leader. Before the earthquake she taught in a primary school just metres down the road from the camp that she and the other families now call home.
When our Emergency Response Team first visited this camp in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake the people were living under bedsheets, cardboard boxes and any pieces of wood or corrugated sheeting they could salvage from the wreckage of their homes.
We managed to source tents for the families and within days, the camp had changed from being makeshift in the extreme to being much more resilient to rain, wind and the elements. We have also built latrines in this community, to prevent the spread of disease, improve health and give some dignity back to these people. We've also given them a generator, which not only provides light at night, but provides some security to the camp, warding of gangs.
During the last month we have been working in Charles Belair camp building a community shelter. The shelter is close to completion and Madame Elizabeth has plans to use it as a classroom, until the children are confident enough to go back indoors.
