Haven is delighted to welcome our Ambassador, chef and TV personality Clodagh McKenna, to Haiti as part of a four-day Enterprise Trip to the country from 5-8th September.
Clodagh joins a group of well-established Irish business leaders and entrepreneurs who are visiting our programmes and exploring a number of our key community and enterprise development projects.
The group will visit the Christine Farm, a farm-to-cooperative programme aiming to create a centre of excellence for farming practices in Haiti, before moving to the island of Île à Vache, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. There, they will meet some of the 2,000 families whose homes we have repaired and upgraded.
On the island, they will also visit numerous Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and well repair projects in its communities. With close to 17,000 cases of cholera in Haiti so far this year alone, opening access to clean water and sanitation remains a key priority for Haven.
Clodagh and the entrepreneurs will then spend time at the innovative Chache Lavi programm, which is giving women living in poverty the necessary tools to achieve positive change in their lives through full-circle business development.
As well as meeting the people taking part in these programmes, the group will share their skills and experience with them, considering ways of further developing their new agricultural and business ventures.
This is my first trip to Haiti, and I look forward to witnessing first-hand the strength of character and determination of local Haitian people. What I love so much about Haven is its commitment to helping the people of Haiti to rebuild their lives: it has the courage to think globally and act locally. These programmes lie close to my heart, working so effectively to empower local women and farmers to develop their own businesses and to secure their independence, and it is great to have the chance to meet the local people who are using new skills to improve their lives and opportunities.
Stay tuned here – and on our Facebook and Twitter pages – for all the latest news and updates from this trip!
