In 2014, Haven began working with the community on the island of Îlet à Bret, which is occupied by fisherman from the nearby Saint-Louis-du-Sud for about ten months of the year.
At the time, all of the shelter on the island was composed of tents or insecure, makeshift structures, and there was no sanitation on the island at all.
We roofed and plastered the only concrete structure on Îlet à Bret, providing a safe space which is now used as a community centre, church and place of shelter during heavy rains or storms. A rainwater harvesting system was also installed in the building, and 50 tents were distributed to the local community. We also established an emergency reserve of a further 50 tents so that local people are assured of access to safe refuge.
