Every year, our Volunteer Programme makes an incredible impact in a local community in Haiti. Next year, you can also make a difference!
In 2019, a group of motivated volunteers will join us in transforming the lives of a local community in Haiti while we also celebrate the 10th anniversary of working side by side with the people of Haiti. The programme takes place on 26 April – 5 May 2019 and the applications are now open.
Every year, our group of volunteers leave a lasting impression on a local community in Haiti, where they lead a range of vital projects which focus on our three core development areas: Water and Sanitation (WASH), training and education, and shelter. Most of the volunteer projects focus on renovating and upgrading local resources, such as schools or community facilities. The project for 2019 is currently being chosen in order to ensure it meets the greatest need in the community where we work.
The programme is open to everyone – there are no construction skills required as you will be fully instructed on how to perform your tasks and you’ll be supervised by an experienced team.
In order to take part, you will be required to fundraise, sponsor or pay €4,000 ($4,000). A €500 ($500) non-refundable deposit to secure your place is included in this. Fundraising covers your cost of travel, including food, water, accommodation, transport, security, scheduled flights, overnight accommodation en route if needed, basic insurance and more. Most importantly, it provides the resources for the critical work of our sustainable community development projects in Haiti, which you will be working on during the programme.
In 2018, the 36 volunteers from Ireland and America taking part in our Volunteer Programme arrived in Haiti on Saturday, 14 April, spending a week in the community of Gressier, a mountaineous area which lies close to the epicentre of the 2010 earthquake.
There, they completely refurbished Jean Jean School, a school for almost 160 students. Set in a remote location and having suffered damage from both the 2010 earthquake and 2016’s Hurricane Matthew, the school found itself in bad need of repair.
Over the course of just seven days in Haiti, our volunteers transformed the school by replacing its buildings’ damaged roofs; painting each building entirely, inside and out; repairing and painting doors and windows; making partitions to divide the three main classrooms; building and fitting shelving, desks and new blackboards; cleaning and varnishing furniture; erecting gates and creating new concrete pathways around the school; and upgrading the school’s storage container.
Meanwhile, a renovated kitchen and the new shaded dining area which volunteers built, painted and decorated will ensure that students enjoy a secure, comfortable place to eat freshly-prepared meals and rest safely out of the searing sun. Equally, by upgrading the sanitation block, and equipping it with new toilets and a water storage system, students and teachers can now avail of safe, hygienic facilities which promote and protect their good health and well-being.
A new sports field – boasting new basketball hoops and football goals – also offers students a fun, sheltered area to exercise in, play sports and develop teamwork skills, and make their school experience even more special.
Volunteering with Haven is the best, most enjoyable, eye-opening and rewarding experience
